Things You Should Do When You Move Into a New Home

In Home Comfort, Home Maintenance, Home Safety

Moving into a new home is an exciting – albeit stressful – time, whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or moving into your third or fourth home. Make sure you’re getting the most out of your new home by doing these essential tasks as soon as you move in.

1) Deep clean – Before you even move any of your furniture in, take some time to really clean the house. You can do it yourself or hire a cleaner, but you’ll likely never have this much unimpeded access to every nook and cranny, so make sure it’s up to your standards of clean before moving your stuff in.
2) Replace smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries – While you hope the previous homeowners kept their batteries up to date, you should always replace them as soon as you move in so you can be sure they’re in good working order from the first night you spend at your new home.
3) Change HVAC filters – While you should get your HVAC system inspected if you’ve moved into a new home, the first thing you should do is check the filters and, if they haven’t been replaced recently, replace them right away. They’ll keep your air clean and save you some money on heating and cooling costs.
