Furnace Tips: How to Control Humidity & Save

 In Energy Efficiency, Furnaces

Summer humidity isn’t just uncomfortable – it can also wreak havoc on your home. Controlling the humidity in your house is simple with these tips, so you can be comfortable, keep your home in great shape and save money.

Keep Your Home Ventilated

Proper ventilation is key to cutting down on humidity, especially in rooms that often experience a lot of moisture. When you take a shower, be sure to turn on the bathroom fan so the moisture is pulled out of your home. When cooking, turn on the fan on your stove hood. It’s also a great idea to have a fan in your basement, as basements tend to be more humid than the rest of your home.

Limit Yourself

During the hot summer months when outdoor humidity is adding to humidity produced inside, try to limit the amount that you contribute within your home. Cooking, showering, and operating your washer and dryer all produce moisture that hangs around in your home’s air, so try to limit the amount of cooking you do indoors by making use of your barbecue, take cooler showers, and do large, infrequent loads of laundry.

Increase Circulation

Keeping the air in your home circulating is one of the best ways to decrease humidity and keeping your home from getting musty and mouldy. To increase the circulation in your home, turn on ceiling fans and rotating fans. Leave interior doors open so the air can move between rooms.

Keep Your Home Cool

High humidity is synonymous with high temperatures. Even cooling your home by a couple of degrees will help lower the relative humidity inside. Keep blinds and curtains closed during the sunniest parts of the day, open windows at night when it’s cool, and run your air conditioner when needed.

Buy a Dehumidifier

If high humidity is becoming a major problem for you and your home and none of the above solutions have worked, it might be time to invest in a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers are great for areas of your home that have very high moisture levels, like basements, bathrooms and laundry rooms.
