Save Energy & Money with Canada’s Greener Homes Grant: Everything You Need to Know
Did you know that the Canadian government is offering energy efficiency rebates of up to $5,000 for eligible homeowners? That’s right! Up to 700,000 grants are available to help homeowners make energy efficient retrofits to their homes — including heating equipment!
At Bryan’s Fuel, we want to help you take advantage of this opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint and save money. We’ve laid out all the information you need to know about the Canada Greener Homes Grant to plant the seeds for your future home retrofits.
What Is The Canada Greener Homes Grant?
The Canada Greener Home Grant will help Canadians make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes. Canadian homes account for approximately 18% of total greenhouse gas emissions and this grant will help to decrease that number, grow domestic green supply chains, and fight climate change.
Who Is Eligible?
Eligible homeowners in Canada can participate in the initiative. Only one homeowner per home can register. You will be required to:
- Provide proof of ownership with your property tax bill number (this number can be found on your municipal property documents).
- Demonstrate the property is your primary residence through either a drivers licence or government issued ID (with address).
Eligible property types:
- Single and semi-detached houses
- Row housing
- Townhomes
- All-season cottages
- Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
- Permanently-moored floating homes
- Mixed use buildings (residential portion only)
- Small multi-unit residential building (three storeys or less with a footprint of 600m2 or less)
How Do I Qualify?
Step 1: Get an EnerGuide energy evaluation
The first step to qualify for the grant is to have an EnerGuide certified energy advisor conduct a home energy evaluation of your home. The purpose of the evaluation is to diagnose areas of improvement that will reduce your utility bills and increase your overall home comfort.
Step 2: Implement the suggested measures
Next, you must implement at least one of the measures identified in the home energy evaluation, such as upgrading to more energy-efficient heating equipment systems for your home or water.
Step 3: Get a post-retrofit evaluation
Finally, you must have an EnerGuide certified energy advisor conduct a post-retrofit evaluation on your home to calculate your improved energy efficiency.
Both the pre- and post-retrofit evaluations will be reimbursed up to $600. If you are eligible for the Greener Homes Grant, you could receive a total reimbursement of up to $5,000 for retrofits.

At the moment, the number of retrofits that qualify for the program is limited due to a lack of available products. The good news is that the program will be running for the next 7 years and as such, more retrofit options will become available over time.
If you have questions about whether your retrofit will qualify for the Canada Greener Homes Grant, Bryan’s Fuel can help. We understand that the federal grant can be somewhat confusing, and our team of Home Comfort Advisors can offer suggestions and guidance along the way.
