Things to Inspect Before Buying a Home
If you’re buying a home, whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or not, one of the most important things to think about is the amount of maintenance you will have to do. This is why home inspections are important, so you don’t buy a home and end up with any surprises. Whether you’re doing the inspection yourself or having a home inspection done, here’s what you should look for.
1) Basement & Attic
The basement and attic should be carefully inspected for any moisture problems, as these are most common in these areas. You can usually tell if there are moisture issues by the smell or checking for signs of mould. Also check for signs of water leaking in the floor and ceiling, as well as rotting wood in exposed beams or leaking plumbing systems and water damage in attic insulation.
2) Plumbing & Electrical
Plumbing and electrical systems are a huge part of your home and affect every area, so it’s important to check to see if they are in working order. Always check for signs of leaks in plumbing, as well as water pressure and drainage issues. For electrical systems, be sure to check the fuse box to see if it is in good condition and make sure there are sufficient electrical outlets throughout the home.
3) HVAC
Because the heating and air conditioning systems are the heart of the home, you want to inspect those to see if they are in need of repair or even replacing. If it’s recently been replaced, you’ll be able to rest assured that you won’t need to buy a new unit for the next several years.
