Hydronic Heating 101

 In Hydronic Heating

Hydronics is a great way to heat your home. It’s efficient and is very good at moderating temperature. In this blog, we’re going to explain how it works and its benefits.

Whoever named hydronic heating didn’t try very hard to come up with a creative name. It’s called hydronic because it literally used “hydro,” which is commonly known as, you guessed it, water. In a nutshell, hydronic heating works by having tubes installed under the house’s floor. Hot water then runs through this tubing system and heats the home.

Hydronic heating can be the sole provider of heat in a home, or it can be used in conjunction with other systems. It’s important to note that hydronic systems won’t get in the way of your regular duct system. The heat that is given off from a hydronic heating system heats the house from the floor up, which can save money. Most heating systems work from the top down, so valuable energy is wasted heating the ceiling of a room. It takes more energy to be able to actually feel the heat on the bottom half of the room, and much of the heat is concentrated on top. Heat naturally rises, so as hydronics heat from the bottom the hot air rises and keeps the room temperature moderate.

Heating from the bottom up also decreases the amount of heat that is used but never felt. As hot air rises, it will eventually leave the house. This happens even more when the heat is starting at the top of the house.

If the only type of heating you have is hydronic, it will save a lot of space. There’s no need for big furnaces, because almost everything is happening in a thin layer of tubes right under your feet!
