6 Ways to Save on Your Next Water Bill
Who doesn’t like to save money? We have some simple tips to help you spend less on water heating. As a bonus, it reduces your energy consumption which is better for the environment. Here are six ways you can save money on water heating. If you already do some (or all) of these, kudos!
1. Opt for short and warm showers
Rather than hot baths. Showering uses a lot of water, but baths use a lot more. If you can stand it, lower the temperature of the water you use in the shower by a couple degrees. It’s not significant, but it can save you money over time and every penny counts. Or should we say, every nickel counts.
2. Turn it off
This might sound obvious, but turn the tap off when you aren’t using it. When you’re brushing your teeth, there’s no need for the tap to be running the entire time. Some people turn on the shower and walk away while it heats up, but this wastes a lot of hot water. You can also turn the shower off when you’re lathering, using it only to rinse. These are just a few examples of how we commonly use water when we don’t need to.
3. Clean with cool water
Washing laundry uses a significant amount of water, so use cold water when you can. Even efficient washers can use up to 25 gallons of water per load. Why spend money on heating all that water if you don’t need to?
4. Fill first
Only turn on the dishwasher when it’s completely full. If you don’t have enough dishes to wash in the dishwasher regularly, wash them by hand instead. Dishwashers use enough water to clean a full load of dishes. It’s a waste to use that much water on just a few items.
5. Stay updated
Keep up to date appliances such as your washing machine, dishwasher, and water heater. As they get older they become less efficient, and technology is always finding ways to make new systems more efficient. When purchasing new equipment, pay attention to the efficiency.
6. Keep right
Push single hand faucets to the cold side, usually right, instead of straight up. When it’s pushed straight up it uses both hot and cold water for a medium temperature, but if it’s pushed right it will only use cold water.
We hope you can use these tips to save some money! They may sound little and silly, but all small actions add up to a large impact.
