How to Prepare Your Home for Winter This Fall

 In Home Comfort, Home Maintenance

With winter just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start preparing your home for the season ahead. These tips won’t just help protect your home from potential winter damage, they’ll also help you save some money by making your home more energy efficient.

Have a Furnace Inspection

Don’t wait until the winter to get your furnace inspected. You should have regular maintenance on your furnace unit weeks before you’ll actually need to use it. Booking it at this time of year will mean you’ll beat the rush, and you’ll rest easy knowing that your furnace is ready to go as soon as the cold weather hits.

Prevent Ice Dams

If your attic isn’t properly insulated or if it’s damaged, you may have air leaks. Air leaks in your attic and roof can lead to ice dams, which can be very damaging to your home. Ice dams cause meltwater to build up and flood your home, causing thousands of dollars in damage.

Inspect Your Roof & Gutters

One of the most important parts of your home during the winter is your roof, so do everything you can to make sure it’s up to the task of protecting the rest of your home from the harsh winter elements. Inspect your roof for signs of shingle damage or leaks, and make sure your gutters are emptied of leaves and other debris.

Stow Your Mower & Other Equipment

You should never leave your gas-powered mower with gas in the tank over the winter months. After the last time you mow your lawn for the season, empty the tank to prevent damage to your mower’s interior parts. Make sure you’re stowing gas and fuel for your mower and other equipment safely.

Drain Outdoor Water Systems

If you leave water in your garden hose or sprinkler systems, it could lead to catastrophic damage over the winter that you won’t even be aware of until the spring – and then it will be too late. Make sure you drain any outdoor hoses, sprinkler systems, fountains and other outdoor water systems completely before the temperatures begin to drop too much.
