Signs You Need a New Furnace
Like everything, the life of a furnace will one day come to an end. Replacing an old, beaten up furnace is a great way to conserve energy, save on your heating bills and leave your house feeling warmer and cozier. Here are some of the main signs you might need a new furnace.
1) The unit is over 15 years old
Most furnaces have a lifespan of about 18 years, but any furnace that’s over 15 years old should be replaced for a more efficient model. Energy Star-rated furnaces are up to 15% more energy efficient than other furnaces, so make sure you choose one with the Energy Star logo.
2) Increased heating bills
There are a number of reasons why your heating bills might increase, from clogged air filters and ductwork to skipping your annual maintenance. If you’ve ruled out all of these factors, consider looking into getting a new furnace. A good way to tell is if your heating bill has drastically increased in a short period of time.
3) Regular repairs
Furnaces should be maintained every year by a certified technician, but that doesn’t mean they should necessarily require repairs. And the more repairs your furnace needs, the more likely it is that it needs to be replaced. Most furnaces require lots of repairs in the last two years of your life, so if you’re paying lots of money to get it fixed, consider whether it’s more cost effective to buy a new one.
4) Unusual noises
Almost all furnaces hum when they’re on, but unusual noises that you’re not used to hearing might be a sign that you need a new one. Sounds like rattling, popping or banging are all noises that furnaces can make when they’re coming toward the end of their life.
5) Adjusting & readjusting your thermostat
Are you constantly having to adjust the temperature on your thermostat to keep your home comfortable? Are some of your rooms too hot and others are too cold? Your furnace may not be able to distribute heat evenly throughout your home anymore, so consider upgrading to a new one.
