Why Won’t My Furnace Fan Stop Running?
Many homeowners don’t realize it, but the fan is an essential part of your furnace. Also called a furnace blower, this is the part of your furnace that allows for proper air circulation and helps your furnace function properly.
Like anything, sometimes malfunctions occur in your furnace that makes the fan blow constantly. If this happens, it will cost you energy and money with having this fan on all the time.
Luckily, there are a couple of common issues that cause your furnace fan to malfunction, and it’s a relatively easy fix.
Furnace Fan Malfunction Causes
There are three main reasons for your furnace fan to stop working properly and to start running constantly:
- The blower control is set to the wrong setting
- The limit switch is set to the wrong setting
- The limit control needs adjusting
How to Fix a Malfunctioning Furnace Fan
Your furnace fan should only be on when it is blowing the warm air out of your furnace and into your home. To test out whether or not your furnace fan is malfunctioning, try lowering your temperature setting on the thermostat. If you try this and the furnace fan still continues to blow air, the thermostat may not be working. If your thermostat is old or you’ve been experiencing other issues with it, it may need to be replaced.
If the thermostat is still working as it should, you may need to restart your furnace. Every furnace has an on and off switch, which usually looking like a light switch and will be next to your furnace in your utility room. Turn off the furnace, then turn off the gas switch as well. Switch both back on, and see if that has solved the problem.
